Fallen Out of Time
In its mid-day cycle, the Ensemble Paul Klee present three lesser-known, but familiar Swiss composers: Vladimir Vogel, Albert Moeschinger and Joseph Lauber. These three composers have, as it were, «fallen out of time» and will be rediscovered.
Three exemplary works that deserve to be discussed again can be heard from the oeuvres of these three composers. Vladimir Vogel introduced himself with the «12 variétudes»—half a century after Schönberg’s first twelve-tone studies— untimely and belated alongside the great composer. His intelligent and varied composition piece is just as virtuous as it is tonally surprising.
In the history of music, Albert Moeschinger’s «Aforismi», written in the 1970s, is a composition before its time: Not avant-garde, but a humorous, small-scale and sketchy series of short musical vignettes and episodes.
Joseph Lauber, fellow student of Debussy in Paris and Strauss in Munich, reached his pinnacle in his early years. Crossing borders between French impressionism and German Late romanticism he imbued his works with a typical Swiss style. His musical language never developed towards modernity and so he became less and less contemporary and finally fell into oblivion.
Wiebke Pöpel filmed the Paul Klee ensemble during their rehearsals. As connoisseur of Swiss music, Doris Lanz moderates the concerts and the subsequent discussion.
