Temporary Metronomes

One hundred metronomes run in György Ligeti’s famous «Poème Symphonique» ticking all together in an uneven tact, yet somewhat lonely. Time is running out for each of the metronomes and for our festival that concludes with them.

Who has a mechanical metronome at home and who would like to bring it to tick along at the festival on Sunday afternoon? Visitors from the city and region of Bern are invited to bring along their long forgotten devices to this live performance and to participate as players (see registration below). A hundred (or more) metronomes are distributed around the room and simultaneously set in motion, in a hundred different tempos. This is the concept of famous Hungarian composer György Ligeti’s «Poème Symphonique» . He loved it when different pulses overlapped to form an irritating time game, a real trompe l’oreille which constantly disorientates the ear. So here, too there is a ticking, but untimely continuum, from which rhythms emerge, until gradually the instruments are silenced.
